Yesterday, renowned designer Raf Simons took the runway in what was his debut show as Chief Creative Officer of Calvin Klein, ushering in their Fall 2017 collection. Now, there had been a lot of talk before-hand about how well he could handle a far reaching brand such as Calvin Klein, who are famous most especially for sexy underwear ads and denim.
For those in and out of the fashion world, Calvin Klein in all its beauty is definitely considered a minimalist brand (which is a concept Simons isn't exactly famous for), and so for Simons, we were expecting his first collection to break the confines of the traditions over at C.K, and it certainly did.
The outfits on show yesterday were a representation of all things quintessentially American. The colours were, exciting, punchy and vibrant. It featured wall street-powerbroker tailoring, classic handcrafted quilting, and even marching band uniforms.
For the men, there was a strong show of tailored suits with peak lapels, double-breasted topcoats, button-up shirts with contrasting pocket colours, and layering of turtlenecks at the base under majority of the menswear. And women, equally so, with the incorporation of floral prints, balloon sleeves, single shoulder cutouts and feminine silhouettes. There were also tailored trousers, five pocket denims and track striped pants, accompanied with western inspired Mexican-heeled boots.
The shows press release stated that the collection was "a celebration of this diversity”. And what better way to show diversity than presenting the show with an ensemble cast of models that represent a wide array of ethnicities, with another American tradition; a parade. The idea of the parade was simply a masterstroke of presenting the sartorial history of both the brand and the country.
The success of the show goes a long way to silence the pessimists and give assurance that there are good things to come from Raf Simons at Calvin Klein. It also serves as an incredible foundation for him to build on for future successes.
Unfortunately, we weren't able to get the video of the event, but here are some pictures from the show.
